Description

To understand the environment in which the protestors were operating, it's important to understand what life had been like for Black students at UMD during this time. By the time of the Home Economics Building takeover, there had only been a significant Black presence at UMD for two years. The environment of racism at the University during the 1950s and 1960s was pervasive, reflected in public statements by University Presidents, the actions of students, and discrimination in the city of College Park.
