Title
October 12, 1968: Black students are taunted and attacked at UMD football game
Description
University football games are often regarded as a place in which the college campus comes together. However, for Black students at UMD in 1968, this was not the case.
During a home football game against the University of North Carolina on October 12, 1968, white audience members threw ice and taunted Black attendees. Black students were rightfully enraged by the violence endured. This was one of the events that helped incite the BSU protest a few weeks later.

Relation
Images of Black students in the 1960s are numbered. This photograph of football players, carrying Coach Ward does not adequately represent the violence endured by Black students. The inability to depict Black students at a football game at UMD leads to questions of representation. How do we represent the experiences of Black students when they are sparingly represented in the archive? Moreover, how do we represent violence against Black students without reproducing it?
