Title

October 25, 1968: The BSU legacy

Description

Pictured are students displaying the Black Power fist, right before silently walking out of convocation on November 1, 1969 in demand of increased Black student recruitment, the establishment of an administrative position that would directly tend to the needs of marginalized students, the end of discriminatory practices by student organizations, and the integration of off-campus housing.

The BSU protest in October 1968 was among a number of triumphant acts by Black students at UMD in their pursuit for equity and humanity, which continues through present day. The formation of the BSU helped continue the Black struggle through political actions and education in the form of an African American Studies department and the Black student newspaper. In all, the BSU made possible a better educational experience at UMD.
